Something to Note...
At Self & Others, we believe that the true power of crystals comes from your personal connection with them.
Rather than relying on lengthy descriptions of what a crystal can do, we encourage you to use your intuition when selecting which crystal you need. Very often the elaborate descriptions will likely leave you feeling more overwhelmed and confused than clarified!
By tuning into your intuition, you'll discover how the crystal can uniquely support you in your journey. Trust the process, listen to the energy it offers, and let it reveal its purpose to you — because the best healing comes from within.
If you need help on how to select crystals, you can follow our “How to Choose Crystals Guide”.
What is Malachite?
- Chemical Composition: Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide with the formula Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂. It forms when copper ore is exposed to acidic water or air.
- Origin: The most notable locations for malachite include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Russia, Australia, and Arizona.
- Crystal System and Habits: Malachite belongs to the monoclinic crystal system, which means it has three unequal axes and one oblique angle. Its crystals are usually prismatic or tabular but can also form stalactites, botryoidal masses, or fibrous aggregates.
- Crystal Family or Group: Malachite is a member of the carbonate crystal family, which includes minerals such as calcite, aragonite, and dolomite. Carbonates are characterised by the presence of the CO₃ group in their structure.
- Hardness and Durability: Malachite has a 3.5 to 4 hardness on the Mohs scale. Rough specimens are not very durable, and you should handle them carefully.
- Colour: Malachite has a distinctive green colour that ranges from light to dark, often with banded or striped patterns. The colour is caused by the presence of copper in its composition. Malachite can also have blue or black inclusions of minerals such as azurite or chrysocolla.
How to Cleanse and Charge Malachite?
- Water: Avoid using water to cleanse malachite as it is a copper-based mineral and can be damaged by prolonged exposure to moisture. Use other cleansing methods instead.
- Moonlight: Place malachite under the light of the full moon to cleanse and recharge its energy. The gentle lunar energy will refresh its protective and healing properties.
- Selenite: Use a selenite plate to cleanse and recharge malachite by placing it on the selenite surface for several hours.
- Visualisation: Hold malachite in your hands and visualise a stream of green light flowing through it, clearing away any stagnant or negative energy and revitalising the stone.
- Sound: Cleanse malachite using sound vibrations from a singing bowl or tuning fork. Pass the sound waves through the stone to refresh its energy.
- Storage and Protection: Due to its softness, store malachite in a soft pouch or box to prevent scratching. Keep it away from moisture, heat, and chemicals to preserve its beauty and energy.
How to Use Malachite
- Meditation and Spiritual Work: Use malachite during meditation to encourage emotional healing and transformation. Place it near your heart chakra or hold it in your hands to connect with its energy of change and protection.
- Jewellery and Accessories: Malachite can be worn as jewellery to benefit from its protective and transformative energy throughout the day.
- Home and Office: Place malachite in your home or workspace to create a protective, healing environment. Its energy can help promote personal growth and clear away negative influences.
- Crystal Grids: Use malachite as the centrepiece in crystal grids focused on transformation, protection, or emotional healing. Pair it with stones like black tourmaline or rose quartz for enhanced protection and heart healing.
- Elixir or Infused Water: Always use the indirect method when making a malachite-infused elixir, as malachite is a copper-based mineral and is toxic if ingested through direct contact with water.
Are There Any Health Risks with Malachite?
Yes, malachite contains copper, which can be toxic if ingested or inhaled as dust. Always wash your hands after handling rough malachite, and never use it in direct contact with water for elixirs. It is safe to handle when polished, but care should be taken to avoid exposure to dust from rough or damaged stones.
